Our family owes a debt of gratitude to those grandparents, parents, cousins, and other relatives who preserved and protected this remarkable collection of photographs throughout their lifetimes. We can enjoy this legacy due to the generosity of a few family members who owned early pictures and gave assistance in identifying them. We believe we have annotated them all with reasonable accuracy, although genealogists should understand that many identifications had to be reconstructed, from recollections of living descendants and known family histories. Most of the earliest Fisher and Long family photographs came from the collection of my grandparents, Florance Clinton Fisher Sr. and wife Grace Minett Long Fisher. Many of these were identified in a series of family history interviews with them in the 1960’s. Additional photos were provided by my Aunts Edith Fisher Green and Ruth Fisher Shaw; Cousins Velma Fisher Cross, Lena Mary Fisher Byers, and Clint Fisher; and Great-Aunt Pearl Fisher Gumm. More recent photos were generously provided by numerous relatives. My mother, Dorothy Kelly Fisher, inherited the F. C. Fisher picture collection and owned additional Fisher pictures. She also provided most of the Kelly and Hartman pictures. The picture of Sampson Davis was contributed by Cousin Reba Lotten, a descendant. Dorothy Kelly Fisher and Edith Fisher Green studied the drafts and searched their memories again and again, so that annotations could be added to bring meaning to the pictures. We owe them special thanks for their help. Also, Lena Mary Fisher Byers made a significant contribution by donating her original portraits of Samuel Fisher and wife Effie Van Tassell, and the pioneer aeronaut Park Van Tassel. Thanks to my daughter, Laura Fisher Armer, who helped
in all the Fisher research and scanned these pictures on her computer
system. The pictures were enhanced for improved contrast and sizing, and
reveal details which were not evident in the originals. |
